Kieu Hoang Donates $5 Million to Hurricane Harvey Relief in Houston
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Sept. 11 that Kieu Hoang donated $5 million for food relief to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
“Mr. Hoang’s stunning generosity to a community far from his home is a beautiful demonstration of the American spirit that inspires us to reach across the miles to help our fellow citizens,” Turner said in a press release. “The fact that he started his new life in America at a basic level, and rose to prominence in the business world, is also a lesson for Houston as we bounce back from adversity.”
Hoang came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1975 at the age of 31, and his first job in the country paid $1.25 per hour, according to the press release. His net worth is now valued at $2.9 billion, according to Forbes. He founded Rare Antibody Antigen Supply in 1980 and Shanghai RAAS Blood Products in 1992. He also owns a winery and vineyards in Napa Valley, California, and plans to build a wellness retreat at Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley, California, per Forbes.
“I am here to pay back, contribute and show my gratitude to this great country,” Hoang said in Turner’s release.
